Lapped Joint employs a design technique lifted from early-modernist architect Josef Hoffman, who was famous for designing interiors to be photographed, rather than experienced in person. His technique of lining every wall surface with ornamental moldings staged his interiors for 2D representation, creating a slippage between photograph, drawing, model, and human-scale 3D space. This use of ornament earned him the ridicule of 20th century Modernists like Adolph Loos, who characterized ornament as feminine, parasitical and dissembling. Loos (and by extension Le Corbusier) considered ornament an intruder — one that masks the purity of masculinist, architectural structures. Here, ornament relishes its slippery role, parasitizing on to the virtual interiors of Gladstone Gallery.
